Beat Carnival

Belfast, United Kingdom

Beat is Northern Ireland’s carnival arts development and production company. We create innovative work, respond to local needs and welcome commissions. The Beat Carnival exists to get as many people as possible involved in carnival arts and, in doing so, contribute to good relations and community well-being. Our role is to promote excellence in carnival arts; devise and organise performances; train and develop artists and encourage community participation, cultural collaboration and civic celebration.

The Beat has pioneered carnival arts in Northern Ireland as an effective form of artistic engagement. We employ artists, actors, musicians and dancers to deliver workshop programmes and to devise and produce performances, pageants and large-scale participatory, celebratory events. Carnival art engages the imagination and effort of all sections of the community; underlines celebration and diversity in Belfast’s creative landscape and presents Belfast City as a place of cultural vision, collaboration and hope – to ourselves at home and to others abroad. Beat’s Summer and Winter Carnivals provide annual calendar highlights: 1,000 person participatory programmes creating stunning public street events.

We will continue to explore expression of our own culture and tradition, while remaining outward looking and open to a diverse, international culture. We have a vision for a world-class creative programme that has significance for the local area of East Belfast; extends to a Northern Ireland Carnival with the potential for an alternative summer festival programme; and grows with Ireland-wide and international partnerships.
