Nicosia, Cyprus

NiMAC [The Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, Associated with the Pierides Foundation] is housed in the renovated building of the Old Powerhouse of Nicosia, located in the historical centre of the capital of Cyprus, and it is the oldest and largest contemporary art centre of the island. Its architectural restoration and conversion into a beautiful art and cultural space was awarded the Europa Nostra Award in 1994.

During the twenty-two years of its operation, NiMAC has organised and presented more than one hundred exhibitions of contemporary art with the participation of established as well as upcoming artists from Cyprus and abroad. Many of these exhibitions were organised in collaboration with art centres, museums and other cultural institutions of European and other countries.

NiMAC covers a wide range of interests not only for the visitor but also for many target groups such as artists, art professionals, academics, students, wider public and tourists. NiMAC also promotes social inclusion through art for financial and political immigrants who live in its neighbourhood, in the old (divided) city of Nicosia within the medieval walls. NiMAC is also pioneering in establishing creative relations between the Turkish and the Greek Cypriot communities of the island. These bi-communal activities promote mutual understanding and collaboration. It’s worth mentioning that NiMAC is actually situated very close to the Green Line, the buffer zone that divides the two sectors (Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot) of Nicosia.
