Zilina, Slovakia

Cultural node Stanica, located in the building of the old and still operating train station Zilina-Zariecie, is an independent venue, artistic laboratory and activists’ collective. Striving to be creative, educative and critical, Stanica would like to enrich the history of the small train station, a place where people used to stop when passing by and share news and experiences from their travels. Truc sphérique, a non-governmental organization for contemporary arts and culture was founded in 1998 in Zilina, and Stanica has been based in the same facility since 2003.

Stanica currently operates a gallery, workshop space, residency space for artists, café and a multifunctional presentation venue for theatre, dance, concerts, discussions and screenings. The centre is also home to a large outdoor space with a garden, park, summer stage and children’s playground that is open to the public. Hosting on average 2-3 artistic events a week, the centre also built an additional performing arts venue S2, an alternative construction from beer crates and straw bales in 2009. Stanica is not just another cultural centre – but a platform for information, research, and realisation of experimental art, cultural and community projects and international and inter-sector communication.

Programmes for supporting emerging artists, festivals, live music, artists in residency, educational programmes, theatre performances, dance performances, visual art/exhibitions, film screenings, clubs, community projects, discussions/lectures, public garden, architecture, cultural policies, think-tank activities.
