Röda Sten Konsthall
Röda Sten Konsthall is located in an old boiler house in an area of Gothenburg in Sweden that’s laden with history. During the 18th century, the ships of the East India Company were loaded in the nearby port. In the 19th century Scottish entrepreneurs founded and planned a local community with its own church surrounding the Carnegie sugar refinery and porter brewery. Today it is an area full of vibrant cultural activities with Röda Sten Konsthall as one of the main actors. The old boiler house was built in the 1940s and since the early 1990s, it has been redeveloped into a house for contemporary art and culture for people of all ages and interests.
At Röda Sten Konsthall there are exhibitions and performances by Swedish and international artists, inspired by current events that question the society we live in today. The centre also runs a wide range of programmes, many of them aimed at children and youth, especially through the youth programme Young & Creative.
Since 2006, Röda Sten Konsthall has been the organiser of Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA), filling Gothenburg with global contemporary art every other year ( www.gibca.se ).
What makes the organisation unique?
Their work in exhibiting and producing contemporary art on large scale; organising a contemporary art biennial on the scale of GIBCA as an independent cultural actor; their experience and knowledge in working with kids and youth through contemporary and urban art; and their methods of working with social issues and arts education.
