Become one of us! We are launching a new application round to become a full or associate member of our network.
Full membership
Becoming a member of Trans Europe Halles, you will be joining a vibrant and unique community of artists and cultural professionals who are united by their exceptional ability to understand and seize the potential of abandoned urban, sub-urban, and rural spaces and transform them into places full of life and creativity.
- You are a non-governmental organisation or private enterprise or a community-led independent grassroots centre/organisation arising from a citizen’s initiative You are operating in a repurposed space/building
- You are running an autonomous, multidisciplinary social and cultural programming
- Your organisation must be at least two years old
Additionally:
- You are a centre/organisation with a legal entity structure. i.e., has legal rights and responsibilities, including tax fillings
- You support and advocate for a democratic and pluralistic society
- You show a strong commitment to equity, sustainability, diversity and equal opportunities. We encourage you to take a moment to explore our initiatives, which reflect how we translate these values into actions
- You have a strong motivation and willingness to be actively engaged
- You should be from one of these 46 countries
- Access to all the networking opportunities, programmes and resources offered by Trans Europe Halles
- Community of peers from 170+ organisations from over 40 countries across Europe and beyond that share their passion for buildings, social justice, arts and culture
- Possibility to shape the future of the network through voting rights or joining the Executive Committee – our governing body
- Advocacy for specific needs such as anti-eviction, urgent response to crisis and solidarity efforts within the network

Organisations within and outside Europe can apply as associate members if they share Trans Europe Halles values, are interested in our activities and would love to join forces.

How can you join?
To ensure that your organisation/centre gets the most out of joining the Trans Europe Halles network and that your values align with ours - a mutually beneficial partnership - we have put together the following membership application procedures (details below).
MAKE A MENTAL NOTE: To become a member, it is required to attend at least one of our meetings, either a conference or a camp meeting. If you haven’t done it yet, but still would like to apply, you will need to attend our spring conference in Sofia, Bulgaria on 5-8 June. Then you would be eligible to be accepted during the fall meeting in Riga, Latvia.
- Fill out the online application form (1 December 2024 – 28 February 2025)
- Screening of applications and feedback to all applicants (March/April 2025)
- Selected applicants are invited to an online presentation for details about Trans Europe Halles and a Q&A session (March/April)
- Attend TEH Conference 99 (5-8 June 2025, Sofia, Bulgaria).
- We provide invitation letters for organisations that need to apply for a visa
- Physical/virtual visit by one of the Executive Committee members to your centre for assessment and report after the conference (June/July)
- Decision on your application (July)
- If recommended by the Executive Committee, you'll be invited (July/Aug) to present your centre at TEH Camp Meeting 100 in Riga, Latvia, October 31–November 3, 2025.
- After your presentation and during the General Assembly at the camp meeting, other members of the network vote to either accept or reject your membership application.
- If approved at the General Assembly, you'll receive a welcome email with details about the next steps.
- Fill out the online application form (1st December 2024 – 28th February 2025)
- Screening of applications and feedback to all applicants (March/April 2025)
- Selected applicants are invited to an online info session with more details about Trans Europe Halles and a Q&A session (March/April)
- A physical/virtual visit by an Executive Committee member to your centre for assessment and report (April/May)
- Decision on your application (April/May)
- If recommended by the Executive Committee, you will be invited (April/May) to present your centre at the TEH conference 99 (5-8 June 2025, Sofia, Bulgaria)
- We provide invitation letters for organisations that need to apply for a visa
- After your presentation and during the General Assembly at the Conference, other members of the network vote to either accept or reject your membership application.
- If approved at the General Assembly, you'll receive a welcome email with details about the next steps.
The procedure for associate members is the same as full members except:
- The Executive Committee approves your application
- You do not need to go through the voting system.
- There is no virtual/physical visit to your space.

DISCLAIMER!
In 2025, while we welcome applications from all over the world, we especially encourage organisations based in Bulgaria, Poland, Portugal, North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Malta, Moldova, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Iceland to apply. We have chosen these geographies in Europe due to our limited presence there. We would be happy to welcome new members from those countries to equalise our geographic reach.
Additionally, special consideration will be given to applications from organisations in rural and sub-urban areas, youth-led collectives and those run by underrepresented communities including LGBTQ+. It is an extra plus if you are an arts and culture organisation working in the fields of alternative media, digital cultures, environmental sustainability, research, democracy, or humanitarian response.
Membership Fees
Part of becoming a TEH member is paying a membership fee. Membership fees are essential for collective prosperity and sustainability of the network: they support its key functions and operations.
The membership fee is based on your organisation’s annual turnover, i.e. your total income per year: total of grants and subsidies and total income from activities such as ticket sales, catering services, renting of facilities, etc.

About TEH
Trans Europe Halles is a member-led non-governmental organisation born on 6 March 1983 and currently based in Sweden. We are a bottom-up value driven activist network that connects 170+ grassroots cultural centres in 40+ countries across and beyond Europe.
Among other things, TEH advocates for the DIY, independent and alternative cultural sector, and advises conscious planners, developers and policy makers.
