Basis Vinschgau Venosta
BASIS Vinschgau Venosta is a social activation hub based in the North Italy Alpine region in the autonomous province of South Tyrol. The building dubbed “Caserma Druso” located in the main urban town Silandro, was transformed from the existing structures of an old dictatorial military barracks into a multifaceted community space. The purpose and vision of BASIS is to pioneer regional and social development in the areas of economy, culture, education and social affairs. It fosters that by offering spaces and various educational formats through events, business, research, creating active networks and also society and art. The building co-funded by the municipality of Silandro, the Autonomous Province South Tyrol and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), was restored to house various co-work spaces, meeting and seminar rooms, workshops, residential accommodation, ateliers and an event space – the Kasino. BASIS is a space for exchange, development, inspiration and collaboration. With the common goal of social and economic wellbeing, BASIS strives to build a benchmark of continuous improvement driven by the integrity, teamwork and creativity of the people in our community.
What makes the organisation unique?
They are an urban center in a rural area, since BASIS is located in a small village of 6.000 inhabitants in the Alps. They are unique for their location and for the challenges they are facing. BASIS brings different perspectives and insights together. They are set in a former fascist military area and live in a bilingual context at the border with Austria and Switzerland. They can bring their experience with regenerating a military building which has a difficult meaning for the local population and how they are dealing with that. They are living in a small context and they want to include different groups of the population to live and be active in BASIS. For this reason, their focus are different economic and cultural sectors that benefit from meeting and working together.
